6th Street Bridge links Simms Park to downtown Residents and visitors have a new way to experience one of Courtenay’s most scenic waterfront destinations. The recently opened 6th Street Active Transportation Bridge officially connects Simms Millennium Park to downtown Courtenay, creating a safer and more accessible route for people walking, cycling and rolling through the city. The bridge was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the end of June that marked an important milestone for active transportation and community connectivity in Courtenay. Spanning the Courtenay River, the structure links downtown businesses, neighbourhoods and trails directly to the Riverside Park and Courtenay Riverway trail. Simms Millennium Park is known for its natural beauty, walking paths and peaceful river views. With the new bridge now in place, residents can move more easily between the downtown core and the park. The connection supports healthy transportation choices, encouraging people to spend more time outdoors and explore local amenities. The project improves access for commuters, families and visitors alike, providing a continuous route that strengthens connections across the community and enhances the city’s growing network of active transportation infrastructure. More than just a new crossing, the bridge reflects Courtenay’s ongoing commitment to creating accessible public spaces, sustainability and a more connected community.
